1979 Pontiac Trans Am Special Edition Description:

1979 Special Edition Y84 Trans Am Bandit. This car is verified by the VIN, cowl tag, and PHS documents. Of the 20,000+ SE bandits made in 1979, less than 20 hardtop versions are known to exist, this is as rare as muscle cars get. Although the car still needs some work, it is in great overall condition, solid from the bottom to top and starts and drives great. This particular car was verified to be one of the few existing Y84 t-top delete cars by Pontiac Historical Services and the documentation comes with the car, which all matches the original cowl tag. Also has a clean vehicle history report from NMVTIS. The Special Edition option came automatically with t-tops and almost noone understood that they had the choice to delete that option which is why there are so few of these cars today. The only Y84 hardtop I can find for sale right now is listed for 25k, and the few examples of sales of Y84 hardtops have almost all been over 20k. This car is listed at 1/2 of those prices with no reserve, a good mechanic who completes the finishing touches will end up with a very rare muscle car to make some real money or take to shows. INTERIOR: Interior is in overall great condition but needs some finishing touches. The dash and console are all original and have no cracks or chips and look awesome. The interior matches what an SE should have (like the gold firebird on steering wheel and shifter knob, etc) and the machined panel on dash looks good. It has no headliner, but it does seem to have all the interior trim pieces in the trunk like seatbelts and visors and trim, The seats are original, no rips or stains and the backseats look great. Options on the car include rear window defrost, custom air conditioning, acoustical insulation, vanity mirror, tilt steering, delay wipers, deluxe trim, am/fm radio, and the Y84 special edition package. DRIVETRAIN: This car runs and drives well but is a partial project car to bring it to top value of a showcar or top of the line auction car as it is not the original engine and we can't identify what it is. 29N and PBJ are codes found on engine. The best guess was a 301 turbo until someone messaged me yesterday and explained why it wasn't a 301 turbo (the stamped year is 69 or 79 but 301 turbo was only made in 80 and 81). I saw a code for 29N that matches a 1964 389 but that doesn't make sense either, so at this point I simply don't know. I think the code 29N on engine means it is a 1969 or 1979 Pontiac engine made in Norwood OH. VIN calls for a 403, that's what should be put into it. Please look at pics of engine. Has newer Edelbrock carb and valve covers. The car drives very well and sounds awesome when idling and driving. BODY: Frame and body are rock solid. The frame, subframe, and body sheetmetal all look good and are basically rust free. Trunk, floor pans, etc are all solid. The paint job looks decent but up close you can tell it's not a top of the line paint job, which won't matter anyhow if someone is restoring it to match as the paint code calls for black paint. New parts needed include hood hinges, some window trim pieces, gas cap taillight door, passenger door handle, the trim pieces in front under the front bumper, The front bumper rubber molding looks great (no cracks or deformities), and the bumper insert that it connects to is in good shape. The original gold honeycomb wheels are in nice shape and the tires look almost new. Very small crack in bottom corner of windshield. Headlights, turn signals, brake lights and wipers all work. My buddy had it on lift and said underneath is dirty but very solid, in very good condition.
Any 1979 Special Edition is a valuable car as is, and combined with the rarity of Y84 hardtops this car could be very valuable if the right guy gets his hands on it. Everyone that has seen this car loves it, it is very cool as is, but could be incredible if someone put some time into it. Car can be inspected in the Kalmazoo MI area, email for details.
This listing requires a non-refundable $1,000 deposit within 24 hours of auction ending, and remainder of balance due within 7 days.
