The early 1970's was the dawn of a new design element in the automotive world, the hatchback. More popular in smaller compacts and sports cars such as the Renault 16, MGB GT and the Lamborghini Espada, the additional third door proved to be stylish and quite useful as well. The lines of the hatchback mirrored those of a fastback lending to a sporty styling yet having the additional rear opening and added space gave plenty of room for additional cargo not always available in smaller vehicles. Volvo first offered the 1800 ES in 1972 as well as the 1800 coupe, however in 1973 only the 1800 ES wagon was offered in the sporty 1800. These stylish little wagons featured all the best equipment of the 1800 coupe, 2.0 litre fuel injected four cylinder and four-wheel disc brakes, and weighing in only 30 kg more than the coupe, the ES featured the same suspension as well. From 1972 to 1973 this model remained nearly the same with only a slight drop in horsepower in 1973 from 130hp to a 112 hp net due to a drop in engine compression. Volvo only produced a little over 8000 1800 ES models in those two years, an average about 4000 per year. Garage Kept Motors is delighted to offer for sale this blue-on-blue example of the 1973 Volvo ES.
Painted in the factory light blue metallic this wagon present very well with a deep luster. The stainless trim and chrome bumpers are well maintained showing only some light patina and scratching and maintains a rich shine. A set of aftermarket wire wheel covers have been added over the factory steel rally wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Radials.
Inside the car features newer front seat upholstery that was upgraded with a dark blue inserts and matching piping trim. The door panels, headliner and carpet appear to be original. The carpet has some very light wear and sun fade but is otherwise well maintained. There is also some soiling of the headliner as documented in the photos and the vinyl dash has several cracks in pad and is protected with a carpeted cover. The black dash features faux wood grain trim and frames the factory Smiths gauges that give this sporty wagon a retro-modern look that is pure early 70's European feel that still feels just as relevant and timeless and features both metric and English units of measurement. The tachometer measures the RPMs in a unique 1000 increment. The factory radio has been upgraded with a Sony AM/FM Cassette player and rear Jensen 3-way speakers. Factory rear window defroster, or "demister" in Volvo speak, is standard on these sporty wagons.
Under the bonnet the 2.0 litre inline 4-cylinder is clean and has been lightly detailed and the factory decals and markings are still present in the engine compartment. The 112hp is transferred through a 3-speed automatic transmission to rear solid axle differential. Underneath, the floorboards and subframe have been undercoated and there appears to be some surface rust present but no rust through. As mentioned, these 1800's feature 4-wheel power disc brakes with manual steering.
The Volvo 1800ES has a reputation for remarkable handling and are spirited drivers. These sporty hatchbacks are fun cars to cruise in especially on winding two lane back roads and comfortable enough for long drives, with plenty of room for luggage to take this car on a weekend away.
