The best classic VWs are pleasant cars for pleasant people. That's what makes this 1974 Volkswagen Beetle so appealing. Good clean looks, a well-maintained style, the right additions, and a solid feeling on the road makes for a pleasant deal.

The front seats are the same style high-back buckets you'd expect on a later VW, but now the headrests have better definition and you sit on a comfy velour. The rear seat and door panels are also done to coordinate. There are nice little stock details, like the working dome light, Wolfsburg crest steering wheel, and classic VDO single pod gauge pack. And we also like the driver-ready upgrades like the cup holder floor console and a full upgraded AM/FM/cassette radio with stereo speakers.

In the rear is an era-correct flat-four motor. This had some of the best features in the Beetle's evolution with a 1600cc displacement and a dual port setup. 1974 was also the last year for the carbureted model (and the hallmark twin tailpipes from the factory.) The powerhouse has the clean look of good care, and the way it runs reaffirms this respect. The four-speed manual transmission has a particularly nice feel, and this is riding on fresh tires. So it drives like a classic but it also feels quite confident.
