It was 1998. My cousin sent me a letter-- and a car.
"Dear Jessie," he said. "Hello from California. I hope this finds you happy and healthy and enjoying a good school year. I thought I'd tell you how happy I am that you will be the proud owner of a certain 1979 VW Super Beetle Convertible."
I was just 10 years old at the time. It was surreal!
"I've got a feeling you're going to look great driving it," he went on to say. "Have fun working on it and I look forward to being able to visit her when I come home to see you. After all, she and I were together for a very long time."
The car was a gift to my cousin. Susan Dey, of Partridge Family fame, gifted it to him. It was purchased at a dealership in Marina Del Rey and was shipped all the way to the East Coast for me.
We did, in fact, have a blast working on it. We restored it to its original luster and have driven it sparingly over the years.
So more about the car- it's a triple white, 1979 Super Beetle Convertible. The engine has been completely rebuilt.
Everything is original, including the interior, which was reupholstered in 2016. Top was also reupholstered in 2016.
Fuel injected transmission. This was the last year the convertible was made, which makes it more desirable. Body is in pristine shape.
