The car was first sold in Cincinnati in June of 1970 and remained there until the early 80s, when the owner moved to Colorado. He had the car there for a handful of years, then moved back east to Ohio in the late 80s and took the car with him. The last time the car was road registered was in 1986, in Colorado. The car has been snoozing in an Ohio garage ever since. As it sits now, this would make for an excellent restoration candidate. With a phenomenally well-documented history from new, great color combination (original paint code sticker still intact in the spare well!), and outstanding originality, this Beetle deserves to be restored to a high standard. Since purchasing the car we’ve gotten it running off an external fuel source and driven it a couple laps around the neighborhood. While it will of course need some sorting, the car does start, run, accelerate, shift, and stop. It doesn’t grind going into gear, and the clutch feels good. We haven’t even washed the car – note the dust all over the place. The next owner will get to see this car just about all the way from start to finish. Exterior: Please defer to the photos. Trim pieces are in impressive shape throughout. Polished surfaces show no damage and only the slightest pit of pitting or oxidation. Headlight lenses are Westinghouse (incorrect), indicators and tail lights are the correct Hella lenses. Hubcaps are in very nice shape, steel wheels show some oxidation. Tires are from 1984, per their receipt. We put a paint gauge on every panel and found readings of 2.2-3.0. This car retains its original paint. There is a dent at the forward corner of the driver’s fender, as well as a ding on the lower passenger door. Glass is all clear and crack-free. Driver’s rear window doesn’t roll all the way up, passenger’s front window doesn’t roll down. Convertible top has a burst/puncture in the driver’s forward corner, in pretty good shape otherwise. Interior: Again, please defer to the photos. Platinum leatherette is discolored after thirty years of sitting untouched. We took a soapy rag and wiped the passenger’s seat bottom to see how it looks...see the photo of that. The leatherette actually cleans up fairly well and with relative ease. A couple hours of sweat equity would go a long way in this interior. Condition of the dash is excellent except for the splitting below the glovebox. Gauge and radio face are bright and clear, no fogginess or oxidation. Odometer reading of 88,523 miles is known to be accurate, and the mileage is well-documented through service records from new. Original rubber floormats are in great shape, not brittle or crumbling. Plastic tabs in the door jambs are all present and intact. VIN sticker and tag are in place. Lights are functional both front and rear, as are signals. Wipers are functional. Mechanical / Underbody: There are a ton of service records that will come with the car, and the original maintenance booklet is also stamped through the first 24k miles of the car’s life. This car does still retain its original 1600cc engine (B6352898), 4spd manual transmission, and Solex 30 PICT-3 single-port carburetor (#113129029D). Highlights of the service records include a valve job, carb rebuild, and clutch replacement in the late 70s, as well as a mid-80s service that included a brake master and lines, a valve adjustment and valve cover gaskets, as well as the replacement of the heat exchangers. As it sits now the car does start, run, accelerate, shift, steer, and stop, albeit off an external fuel source and battery pack. Underbody is half decent. There is rust in the rocker panels, particularly on the driver’s side. There is also a spot of almost-through rust in the driver’s rear floor. With any further questions, requests, or to discuss purchasing, please reach out to Jake at 773-303-6122.
