Additional comments:
All camper components work flawlessly (stove, sink). Things to be addressed include possibly replacing the pop-up tent fabric (the zipper no longer works and the screen is in poor condition - the tent itself is totally serviceable and this didn’t bother me, but if I were to keep it I’d upgrade it with a GoWesty one). I would also install a solar charge regulator and dual battery monitor, and possibly replace the hookups for water and shore power (again, this is unnecessary but they are also showing their age and could use an upgrade). Lastly, the fold-down TV is a mystery - it includes a dome light (which works), but I cannot locate the inputs or connections to make it work properly. I’d address this, but having a TV while I camped was basically of zero importance to me so I never did.
While you can expect this year of Westy to have its particular patina, this is probably the most mechanically well-sorted Vanagon I’ve seen in quite a long time. The beauty of the air-cooled set up in its simplicity - especially when mated to the 4-speed transmission, makes for a hugely reliable and awesome overland vehicle. This Westfalia is well-suited to overlanding, vanlife, daily driving, or whatever adventure you should want to throw at it. With its great clearance and approach angle and much of the weight over the rear wheels, you can enjoy its off-road capabilities that will deliver you to awesome places. It’s no Syncro, but it comes close and gets stares, thumbs-ups, and smiles basically everywhere you take it - mountains to beaches, and everywhere in between.
This van passes smog with flying colors and gets waves and comments everywhere it goes. The new owner won't be disappointed. I just have to make some life changes and need to be a bit more 'liquid' so want to pass this on to another VW enthusiast.
