1985 Toyota Other Base Description:

Runs like a top. 178,500 on the chassis. Motor rebuilt at 166k. This truck is Mechanic owned and I am very well versed in 70’s through 2000s Toyotas, having owned close to a dozen myself.

I spend several years searching for a 1st Gen Truck this clean. The original owner bought it new in 1985, and sold to his friend in 2004. I purchased the Truck in 2016.

It came from the dry High Desert in Jerome, Oregon and was used as a hunting truck. I'm pretty sure by the condition it was probably garaged for a period of its life. In 2004 it moved to Bend, OR which is still a very dry climate, and that's where it lives today.

This was a very unique build for 1985. From the factory - NO SMOG equipment. This is how it came stock, no smog pump, no EGR, no nothing. I don’t know the specifics, but it seems when the EFI became available, Toyota stopped putting smog equipment on their carbureted models, so this truck has a lot more power than 22Rs that came with the smog equipment.

The stock vacuum line setup on this truck is the most simplistic of any of the options that were available, most 20R and 22R vacuum diagrams are a nightmare, not this one.

The only belt up front runs the alternator and water pump. No power steering, no A/C compressor, stripped down, basic and super easy to work on. It even has the original rubber distributor boot - I never knew those even existed.

I have an entire factory bolt on power steering setup that can be negotiated separately if desired.

- Engine rebuild at 166k, BRAND NEW Toyota head. Deschutes Automotive Machining did the work.

- all new gaskets all the way around. One small sweat up front and one small leak that forms a drip at the rear of the oil pan. Not enough to constitute me re-sealing it at this time, but an easy job.

- The interior is immaculate, I have replaced the door chime, the driver’s side window crank gears, the driver’s door dome light switch, and the heater blower resistor – all wear parts you would expect to need to be replaced. Everything else is stock from the factory.

- Lots of spare parts that will come with it, including two extra carbs, some interior parts, an SR5 rear window with the pass through opening (the stock glass is one piece) so you have the option of using either, gasket kits, etc.

I just had a tire shop here in town install ‘pizza cutter’ 33”x9.5” BFG Mud Terrain tires on it with approx 20-30% life left. View the last pictures to see the tires that come with it. The All-Terrains pictured from last week I’m keeping for a Chinook build. You can run these tires for a while then replace with new.

- 4" leaf spring lift with Rancho Shocks

- Smittybuilt tube bumpers that need to be blasted and re-powder coated as the ends have chipped away.

- off road fog lights (freakishly bright, other drivers will not be happy if you have these on while on the road)

- comes with a diamond plate tailgate wrap. I personally hate diamond plate, but feared the worst removing it. Turns out it's one of the nicest tailgates I've seen, ZERO rust. One hinge needs to be tightened but doesn't affect the functionality.

- Bench Seat cover - I've never removed it, purchased it with it on there, and like the diamond plate I'm convinced the seat is probably in dire straits but super comfy with it on there and haven't had a reason to remove it. The seat could be in mint condition. If requested I’ll remove the seat cover and take some pictures.

I have a ton of info on everything I've done to this truck in the last three years, point is it's running like a top and has very little rust. The bed has some seam rust starting to show though this last year, it has been mitigated from the inside, I personally haven’t in person seen a bed in this good of shape on a 1st gen, although I do know they are out there. I seriously considered keeping this truck for the chinook build, but I don't have the heart to see this truck go that route.

The topper is in great shape, I’ve just re-sealed it to the bed with new rubber gasket. The gas shocks work great as well as the locking mechanism and comes with keys.

As a recap - the only things this truck needs are a tailgate hinge tightened (tight space to reach into), and the rear of the oil pan slow drip fixed.

Please ask questions, I would love to answer them and get you specific pictures if requested. Good luck bidding and congrats to the new owner of this truck, I will be sad to see it move on!
