1974 Porsche 914 Description:

1974 Porsche914-4 2.0 with fully functioning D-Jet. Now 2200cc after 2016 rebuild.

First, the bad:

Mediocre paint

Radio doesn't work (two different new antennas failed to pull in any stations, but it does have power and makes static. Currently no antenna installed at all.)

Heat doesn't work

Windshield washers don't work

Turn signal doesn't self-cancel

Reverse lights don't come on in reverse

Dome light doesn't come on (could get 12v, but couldn't pull any current through this circuit)

Dash cracks present

Windshield is old - probably original - lots of tiny chips from regular use

2016 Rebuild Details (the good):

AAPistons High Performance Engine Rebuild Kit

New Forged Chromoly 4340 Counterweighted, magnafluxed, balanced crankshaft (76mm)

New Forged Chromoly H Beam Piston Rods (5.158") with ARP 2000 rod bolts

New flywheel

Hypereutectic flat top Pistons with valve relief cutouts (96mm)

Biral Liner Upgrade (steel sleeve, aluminum cooling fins)

New bearings, rings, and seals

Adjusted deck clearance to achieve 10.5:1 compression ratio (run premium fuel)

Webcam 73 grind camshaft ("Good overall performance for engines with stock fuel-injection")

Webcam racing solid lifters w/ EDM oil hole on lifter face for better oiling

Webcam aluminum cam gear

Heads professionally rebuilt

New valves

New valve guides

New rocker studs

New adjustment lock nuts

Webcam high performance valve springs

Chromoly valve retainers

New Sachs clutch kit (clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing)

New (rebuilt) pressure sensor (037 unit with more top end fueling from AutoAtlanta)

New (rebuilt) engine bay relay board

New seals on transmission input shaft, shift rod, and speedo output

Pedal box rebuilt with brass bushings

New engine mounts (front stock, rear from 911)

Rebuilt steering rack

New front wheel bearings

911 Turbo tie rod ends

New high performance all season tires (set of 5 on original Fuchs wheels) in correct outer diameter (195/65-15)

New bushings on front control arms

Intake runners powder coated and tumbled with high temp ceramic coating (often used on exhaust headers - looks like chrome)

Fan shroud powder coated silver

Fan sand blasted

New (rebuilt) Bosch alternator

Cooling tins painted red

All new engine bay seals

Silicone vacuum lines

Oil catch can on PCV line

New Bosch "Super Blue" coil

New Magnacore high performance spark plug wires

Fully Rebuilt distributor (in-spec centrifugal and vacuum advance, and fuel injection points)

All new wiring harnesses for D-Jet fuel injection, ignition, and alternator (built by Jeff Bowlsby)

Brand new (not NOS, not rebuilt) fuel injectors from FiveOMotorsport (capable up to 150psi; currently running 50psi)

High torque starter

AEM wideband O2 sensor (to monitor AFR), oil pressure, and voltage gauges mounted discretely under dash. Fuel pressure gauge in engine bay.

Fueling can be adjusted by fuel pressure and a rheostat in cylinder head temp circuit. No adjustment necessary at this point - I am more than happy with how it runs. Runs relatively rich at idle (~11 AFR) and leans to ~13.5 AFR at higher load / higher RPM. Very good throttle response.

I've been getting ~23mpg in mixed, spirited driving.

New ignition switch

Fuel pump relocated to front long ago

New fuel lines, clamps, and filter both up front and in engine bay

"taco plate" and oil temp sensor present, but no gauge in cockpit

All new shift linkage bushings, including brass bushing at transmission housing

New original color brown carpeting

New rubber seals around side windows

Headlights in perfect working order, but cosmetic shrouds missing

Bursch exhaust from ~2011

Entire chassis underside liberally coated with Amsoil HD Metal Protector (waxy, amber color), including fenders and hell hole

No flex in chassis - door gap does not change when 200lb passenger sits in it

Factory installed front and rear sway bars - new bushings in rear sway bar links

NO RUST! Everything looks original and solid.

It looks like it's had a mediocre repaint done in the original Light Ivory color sometime in the past. Front bumper more recently painted. Though far from perfect, I still get comments from people all the time about what great shape the car is in.

There are some remnants of the dealer-installed AC, though it is nearly entirely gone. This is why there's a square patch and unconnected rubber lines in front trunk.

About 4,000 miles on new rebuild with no issues. Starts and runs great hot (100F) or cold (20F), pushing it hard or trundling along. Short or long drives. Pulls strong from any RPM - enough power to spin rear tires at low speeds. Correct diameter tires keeps highway RPMs in a sane range; 80mph is ~3500rpm. Shifts well for a 914. Small oil drips here and there (unfortunately). First-fill oil changed after getting engine started, warmed up, and ignition / fueling dialed in. Oil changed, valve lash adjusted, and spark plugs replaced at 3000 miles; valve lash barely changed since rebuild. Spark plugs looked good. Oil sent to Blackstone Labs for analysis - everything looks normal.

I would not hesitate to drive this car long distances - I've taken it on a few 4 hour drives without issue, and I use it to commute to work (1 hour each way) when the weather is nice.

Bought the car in 2010 after getting my BS in Mechanical Engineering and getting hired at a large engine manufacturing company. I have a huge stack of service records that show it spent most of its life getting serviced at the Atlanta Porsche dealer. I have put 1k-3k miles on the car every year. It lost enough compression that it would no longer run right in the summer of 2015, so I decided to do a full engine rebuild. Finished rebuild in October 2016, replacing really everything I could imagine with the hopes of many more years of trouble-free motoring. Got married in May 2017. Wife does not want me driving anything without airbags, so it's sadly time to say goodbye to my favorite toy.

Local Pickup Only - Cash preferred. We could do a cashiers check if we go get the check together - so I can see it being made and know it's not fake. Indiana title is clear - no issues, no liens or anything on it.

I'm happy to talk about the car with you if you have any questions.
