I’ve always been a fan of backdated early 911s.I even have one of my own. They have the great looks of the classic early 911 longhood with a better chassis and equipment. In my opinion, they make one of the best Porsches for touring, performance events, or even daily use.

The key to building a great “back-dated” 911 is to start with a superb car.I often tell people that the car you start with should cause you to take pause because it is that nice. In the end, they make the best builds. This example certainly follows that rule.

This Carrera was built in October of 1987 and sold new by a local Southern California Porsche dealer on March 10th, 1988.It was ordered in Guards red on black partial leather with the following optional factory equipment:

Blaupunkt Reno radio

Forged Fuchs wheels (16x6 and 16x7)

Cruise control

Electric sliding sunroof

The previous SoCal owners primarily serviced this 911 at Aase Motors in Fullerton, California.Aase is one of the top air-cooled shops in Southern California and it is well-respected.Significant and recent services performed by Aase include:

Top-end engine rebuild (valve job) about 25k-miles ago

Bilstein shocks (front and rear)

Turbo tie rods

New catalytic converter

Rebuild fuel lines

Replace oil lines

Regular oil services and major tune-ups

In February of 2014, a local Newport Beach enthusiast purchased the car and had it inspected. The car was found to be in excellent condition and the perfect candidate to build a sport-purpose 911 RSR backdate. After 6-months of driving and minor services, the owner decided to begin the build. He employed TRE Motorsports for the transformation.

Highlights of the build include:

GT3 style muffler black ceramic coated

Strip body and repaint in factory Slate Gray

Fit and install backdated body parts

Butt weld steel turbo flares

911 R taillights

Fiberglass bumpers, hood, and duck tail spoiler

Custom rear license plate panel

Retained interior front steel in stock form/no cutting of chassis

Custom front bumper with soft lip spoiler

Custom rear 911 ST-style roll hoop wrapped in leather

All new rubber seals

Nickel plate brightwork

Zuffenhaus 9x17 and 11x17 Fuchs-style wheels

Full custom interior with embossed leather

Backdated LED instrument gauges

Custom projector style headlamps

Early ’73 mirrors

Cibie reproduction rallye hood lamps

Rear seat delete parcel box

Exhaust headers

Tarret front and rear sway bars

Upgraded torsion bars

Bilstein shocks with coil-over helper springs

Porsche Boxster brakes and steel brake lines

RSR style front strut bar

Upper monoball quick camber kit

Front wheel bearings/seals

Wevo short shift kit for G50

He enjoyed the car for 2-years/1,000-miles and serviced it locally with Hergesheimer motorsports. He sold the car in February of 2016 to the current local Orange County owner. For the past two years/4k-miles, this owner has used the car on several vintage touring events and local shows. Before purchasing, he had Aase Motors do a pre-purchase inspection. They found the car to be in excellent condition with just a few minor needs, which this owner addressed:

Fuel sending unit

Clutch kit

Clutch master/slave cylinder

Updated front oil cooler fan

Door lock controller

New battery

Finally, Aase performed a leakdown test and the results were excellent (numbers off of 100%):

1)3% 2) 5%3) 4%4) 5%5) 5%6) 3%

Before listing, we had our local specialist install a new battery, adjust the hood, and put the car on the lift for a quick inspection. He found this example dry with no signs of prior damages/issues and in excellent mechanical condition.

This RSR is in excellent condition and has a great presence. The paint looks fantastic with some minor chips primarily on the hood/front nose (see pics) from typical light use. They’ve all been professionally touched up.The glass has no cracks. All the exterior lights work properly.Daytime running lights are part of the updated projector LED headlamps. The Fuchs-style wheels are in excellent shape with no curb rash and are wearing Continental summer tires with more than half-tread remaining. The Boxster brakes have nearly 75% life remaining. The glass is all original except for the Sekurit windshield that has a few chips (see pic).

The interior looks equally as nice and the attention to detail is extremely well executed. The sport seats show minimal signs of wear with no rips or cracks. The carpet, headliner, and door panels all look fresh and new.The dash has no warping with a couple tiny hairline cracks near the vents (see pic). The LED gauges are wonderful and easy to read. They all work properly except for the clock that runs a tad slow. The A/C system has been serviced and blows ice cold (see pic). All the buttons, switches, and controls function properly.Even the cruise control works.

The chassis looks just as fresh as the rest of the car (see pics). There are no signs of rust or damage. It is clear this Porsche has always been well cared for and not abused. The numbers matching engine and transmission are dry with no signs of leaks.

This RSR is a blast to drive without beating you up.It starts easily and holds an even idle regardless of how cold it is outside or how long it has been sitting. There is no excessive smoke either. The power response is very nice and this 3.2 motor is what people in the industry would call “happy.”It revs out quite easily. The gearbox shifts like butter with no grinding or slipping. The suspension is taught and responds quickly to driver inputs. The car has excellent mechanical grip. The brakes are fantastic with no fading or pulling.

Whether you are sporting through the canyons, cruising to a show, or participating in a long-distance vintage event, this 911 can certainly wear many hats and perform competently in all activities.

California registration is current and it passes the strict CA smog test.

This 911 comes with an extra key, car cover, jack, many service records, and the space saver spare.
