1965 Porsche 356 Description:

1965 Porsche 356C 1600 last of series, numbers matching (COA).I purchased this car in 1975 and has been stored in my garage for the last 42 years. Due to jobs, kids and college, now age and health, never finished restoration.I believe the car originated in a dry climate, probably California as it landed in Minnesota after engine problems by a Minnesota Naval officer traveling from the west coast to the east coast in the early 70’s.Restoration work done: the car was in its original color light ivory 6404, and about 6-7 years ago, the car was re-sprayed in that color. The only rust was pinholes in the front half floor pan and in some in the lower door skins. Metal work was done to replace. Minor headlight basket repairs too. Battery box good, just some curb dings. I was very satisfied with paint and metal work for a daily driver, looks very good, but a couple of very small dings below the bumper lines missed but easily spot repaired if you want. Also, unfortunately a small ding happened during transit but easy to spot repair. No evidence of major damage in the past.

About 1976, the engine was rebuilt. All engine bearings replaced, crank shaft reconditioned. A new camshaft from Performance Products and new cylinders, heads rebuilt, all done by a local professional engine machinist who was a VW/ Porsche air cooled engine fan. It was installed and run a few times and ran very strong. The second gear synchronizer was weak so the engine and the transaxle were removed and NOS Porsche synchronizers from Stoddard for all gears replaced. The engine has not been installed since, so the transaxle is untested, in fact no gear lube in the transaxle. Other mechanicals: Koni shocks and bearing/seals axles, steering damper. Rotors good but no doubt, calipers will need cleaning again. Some brake lines replaced.

Vent window parts re-chromed.Finish the restoration with new upholstery and rubber for a very nice, very valuable “daily driver” or turn it into a $100+K show car detailing everything.Given the climbing value of these cars, either way works. I believe I have all the parts, nuts, screws bolts, old rubber, etc., but not everything that came as new, tool kits, doc’s, etc. Only big thing missing is the radio, it had a VW radio in it when bought. Prices vary wildly on these cars but if well done, plenty of headroom to make a good investment especially for the 356 enthusiast who can do some or all of the work themselves, plus enjoy your workdriving the car.

Past member of the 356 Registry, my second 356, owning the first back in 1971 so I am reasonably familiar with these cars. They all are very special and were so ahead of their time and with their storied Porsche history, will only appreciate more as interest continues to climb. To drive one is a thrill and comfortable and of course, it will always get you home as only the Germans would expect. The British, not so fussy.
