1971 Porsche 911 911T w Sportomatic Transmission Description:

Offered for your consideration is an extremely rare 1971 PORSCHE 911T Sportomatic with 54,000 original miles. It is a matching numbers car per my friend who bought it in 1996 and had been with him for the last 20 years before we took ownership in April 2017. As you can see in pictures, it has been driven, but it has been well taken care of. We have receipts and service records from 1996 on. It has the rare 4-speed Sportomatic transmission that is a clutch-less manual; rare, because most cars have been converted to a manual transmission for ease of maintenance.

Pros:

  • This 911T is definitely one of the few unmolested long hood PORSCHEs left with the original 4-speed Sportomatic transmission. Quirky or not, this car needs to be preserved because it is part of PORSCHE history with very few original Sportomatic cars left on God’s green earth! It was PORSCHE’s very first attempt to make an automatic transmission starting in 1969 and it worked well when kept in fine fettle. Just received a full tune-up, newer torque convertor and a fully rebuilt transmission servo and transmission oil pump. This 4-speed Sportomatic shifts like it should. Those who have driven a Sporto will know that it is the real grandfather of modern day PDK and not the Tiptronic. Believe it or not, it can be shifted faster than a manual due to the lack of clutch!!
  • It has the original 2.2L engine that was completely rebuilt in 2011 at a cost of $20,000 with JE forged pistons and 2.4-liter cylinders. It hasthe PORSCHE mechanical fuel injection and it runs like a champ despite some oil leaks.
  • We have 50 to 60 pages of receipts totaling around $50,000 from the last 21 years and all the maintenance and upgrades performed are listed.
  • It has a very tastefully done fiberglass RSR wide body conversion along with a whale tail. The conversion was done back in 1997.
  • The seats and some carpeting are upgraded to that of a late model 911. The dash is original 1971 as far as we can tell. Aftermarket seatbelts and stereo are installed as well.
  • We have a clear titleon hand.
  • Good brakes and most all other ancillaries according to the repair shop. Two new long-life AGM batteries are installed last month.
  • It has the factory sunroof and all glass is in good shape too.
  • The 15” wide wheels look the part and appear to be original FUCHS wheels according to some experts.
  • Overall a very good candidate to fully restore it back to factory specs considering the skyrocketing appreciation long hoods are enjoying in the recent past; or heck, enjoy it as-is as an RSR replica with all the right patina on it!
  • Previous Owner bought the car in Canada in 1996 (bill of sale included) and it must be a Canadian model with the speedometer being in kilometers (86,000 kilometers=54,000 miles). The Canadian cars have almost no emissions hardware compared to contemporary US models and the fuel injected 911E was better performing than the carbureted 911T. A PORSCHE Certificate of Authenticity would reveal more of the early history.
  • The car has received a recent overspray and so the paint is mostly blemish free.1
  • Cons:

  • The engine has developed the dreaded 8th main oil leakage from behind the crank pulley for the last couple of years and it has been fixed temporarily with the aluminum sleeve solution. It still seeps along with other leaks and needs a quart of oil every few thousand miles.
  • The RSR body kit is professionally installed in 1997; but today, an original matching numbers car like this would have been much more valuable if it had the original slab-sided fenders and chrome bumpers. To those who know PORSCHEs, it is a relatively easy conversion back should you procure the original sheet metal and bumpers.
  • The seats and some other interior pieces like steering wheel are replaced with that of a newer model back in the 1990s.
  • Some of the external rubber parts are showing their age (46 years!)
  • Due to the age of the car, this 911T is listed it as-is. No warranty is offered or implied. I can arrange to view the car with an appointment. No joy rides unless you have cash in hand.

Once again, the Sportomatic is super rare and is the only one eBay at the moment. The last one we saw listed was missing the engine!! The German collectors will kill for an original Sportomatic and so if you are an exporter, grab it while you can!!
