1958 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight cloth and vinyl or leather Description:

Offered here is an outstandingly rare 1958 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Coupe. One rarely sees one of these cars for sale, but almost never with the options list on this particular car, all factory installed: J-2 carburetion, factory air conditioning, autronic eye, transportable radio, power antenna, four-way power seat, power windows, and I am sure a few other things I cannot recall at the moment. I am uncertain where this particular was sold originally, but I have known about it for over twenty years when it came from the Vancouver area to the Southern U.S. where it was in a collection for many years until I purchased it several years ago. I would classify this as a sound, mostly original car that has had some restoration as needed over the years. It has been repainted in the original champagne mist color at some point with later touch ups here and there, and the paint still looks very good. The color varies from a silvery gold to a rose gold, depending on the light and is very attractive on the car. The interior was also redone a long time ago using the correct fabric and patterns, and it still looks very good as well. The tons of chrome on the car are in very good original shape with little to no pitting on the potmetal pieces that are so often bad on these cars, such as the tail light housings. The front bumper has some scratches and the rear bumper has some small peeling spots, but both bumpers still have a good shine. The only thing cosmetically that needs attention are the bumper ends, which were rechromed with some sort of plastic coating which has turned gold over the years. The bumper ends themselves look quite sound and unrusted. There is no rust to speak of on or in the body, and the panels look nice and straight to me. I think anyone would be proud to own and drive this car just as it is. Perhaps some would rechrome the rear bumper, but beyond that everything looks nice. The interior chrome is in outstanding shape. The original dash pad is faded some but still in very good condition. The headliner and visors were redone in a foam-like material and look nice. When I bought the car several years ago it had not been used in a few years, so I went back through the J-2 carburetors and added risers under the base to help prevent percolation with modern gas. I also did other mechanical work as needed to make the car a reliable driver. Everything works on the car: the air blows cold, but does need a freon boost during the season. I spent a great deal of time and effort locating the missing plenum that directs air to the upper vents and have everything ducted correctly now. All lights and signals work, even the Safety Sentinal works. The autronic eye works, but it does not reliably dim, so I have not used it frequently. The transportable radio plays in the car, but it has quite loud volume, so it may need servicing. The power antenna works. The power windows and seat work. The trunk light works. I have been driving the car a good bit this last week and have been pleased with its performance. Does the car have any needs? Well, I am thinking the transmission is going to need some attention before too much longer. When cold, it is moves forward more slowly until the car warms up for a few minutes, and at times it does not like to go into reverse but has never left me stranded. The power brake pedal is rather harder than it should be, so perhaps some service there is indicated soon, but I have driven this car safely for the several years I have owned it. I have not seen a 98 with all of these options for sale in some years now, and I know if I sell this one that I’ll never likely find another. If you have wanted one of these cars, then you know what I am talking about. I welcome questions about the car and will send my phone number to those with serious interest. I have many more photos than I have posted, so just ask if you want to see more. The Olds is sold as-is, where-is with no warranties of any sort expressed or implied. Rex Crews Durham, NC
