1962 MG Midget -- Description:

The year is 1962, Brothers John and Clarence Anglin and fellow inmate Frank Morris escape from Alcatraz Island prison, the only ones to do so. While this cool steel bumper MG Midget rolls into showrooms for sale. Now with a 1275cc motor this little roadster is ready to take on any winding mountain road, or just cruising down the highway. The 5-speed manual is backed by a 4.22 rear end, all this power is wrangled by the front disc brakes. All this little roadster needs, is a new home. The first version, announced at the end of June, 1961, was essentially a slightly more expensive badge-engineered version of the MkII Austin-Healey Sprite. The original 'frogeye' Sprite had been introduced specifically to fill the gap in the market left by the end of production of the MG T-type Midget as its replacement, the MGA had been a significantly larger and more expensive car with greater performance. Mechanically the car was identical to its Austin-Healey counterpart, retaining the rear suspension using quarter-elliptic leaf springs and trailing arms from the 'frogeye'. Brakes were 7-inch drums all round. A hard top, heater, radio and luggage rack were available as factory-fitted extras.
In October, 1962, the engine was increased to 1098 cc, raising the output to 56 HP 62 lbâ‹…ft, and disc brakes replaced the drums at the front. Wire spoked wheels became available. The doors had no external handles or locks and the windows were sliding Perspex side-screens.
