1988 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 420SEL Description:

It's time to let my fantastic W126 highway cruiser go--I need to make room for a different car. This 1988 420SEL has about 214,500 miles on it as of listing, and is my daily driver. I have expended a massive amount of labor and money on this car during my ownership so that it could do the daily LA commute as well as be reliable for any road trip the family may take. It has done a couple recent 1500-mile trips in excellent comfort and reliability. This car will take good care of the next owner as it has my own family.
This is an original Fletcher Jones (South Orange County) Mercedes, and it's been in the LA area it's whole life. I have service and repair records on the entire history of the car all the way back to the end of its original lease. There are no warning lights lit, and all lights and gauges in the dash work. Within the last 5000 miles it has had belts, hoses, tires, brake pads, brake rotors, shocks (all 4), air oil & fuel filters, A/C compressor, front wheel bearings, and many many other parts replaced. The climate control system works correctly, and the A/C is cold. The central locking system works correctly (including trunk and fuel flap locks). All power windows work.Even the ABS system works correctly. Please note that since the photos were taken, the windows have been tinted with 3M film (light tint). The wheels are newly powder-coated and were machine-balanced without tires before coating. All exterior lighting works correctly.
The car drives beautifully, and speaks to the longevity and outstanding engineering that the W126 is known for. The engine idles smoothly and pulls strong at all speeds. No noises or oil consumption issues. Trans shifts perfectly. This car can be driven home to wherever you need to go, and it's set up for road trips with cup holder, phone tray, center console with USB charging ports (2), satellite radio, etc. The audio system with original MB amplifier system sounds excellent.
The interior is in good condition overall, though the leather is showing it's age. There's a 2-inch split in the passenger side lower rear seat cushion, which you can see in the photos. Likewise the paint & exterior are in good condition, though the paint also has the nicks and scratches of many years of service. There's a door ding on the top of the right rear fender and a touched up scratch nearby, but that's the worst of it. The car passes CA smog and is currently registered. It doesn't drip oil/fluid.
What it needs: Sunroof is inoperative. Power antenna is disconnected (I don't listen to AM/FM) but it didn't work well. Cruise control works but not well--has a hard time picking a speed. Some of the plastic trim over the speakers in the rear window shelf has cracks from exposure. Otherwise the car doesn't really need anything. Buyer can take some spare parts and filters in the trunk with the car.
