*Restoring any automobile takes time, research, patience and well qualified mechanics and craftsmen. This Mercedes was purchased 5 years ago from an owner in San Diego. It has been fortunate to find the two older mechanics who know these cars extensively to perform the repairs on this automobile. It also helps when they appreciate the history of Mercedes and have a passion for what they do. Anyone who has been involved in the restoration process knows that you have to be diligent and search for some of the parts necessary to improve a 48 year old car. Sourcing these original parts can start on Google and ebay. Sometimes you find out about a guy who has a Mercedes graveyard in New York or someone else. Parts have been found and bought from sellers in Arizona, California, Canada and Turkey for this classic. A brand new Oil Damper still in the original bag with the label on it was found in Toronto, Canada. We thought what a lucky find. It was installed, leaked oil and had to be removed. The rubber gasket had dry rotted and a new gasket had to be made from cork. All of the oil leaks have been addressed with only a few little drops occurring as normal. Look at the metal mount inside the engine compartment in the front center between the information plates where the hood rests. Most of these are painted over and usually look quite cruddy. This was removed, soaked overnight and cleaned in thinner. A wire bristle brush, steel wool and a cloth were used to remove the old paint and then it was buffed with a cloth wheel using rouge and polish. Metric stainless steel screws were finally found to replace the others. This is just one of many examples of issues experienced over the past 4 years of bringing this car to where it is now. Many of the visible and hidden hardware accessories have been replaced with stainless steel to improve the condition of this car. I have a diary outlining the work and time invested in the restoration which gives a vantage of enhancement to this Benz. It has been the combination of an art project and research needed to write a 4 year term paper. It truly is a 'Labor of Love' to get involved with a classic car like this. The value of these Mercedes sedans, especially the 300 SEL 3.5 V8 have been increasing and will continue to do so. This is a great price and value for a classic like this.
