1973 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 4.5

This 1973 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 4.5 comes from the final year of production for this model and stayed with its original owner until 1986. The second owner was Mercedes master mechanic, who owned the car until 2015. The Third owner acquired it in 2016 and has since spent more than $12k on refurbishment, including a rebuild of the air suspension by Buds Benz and the installation of new heater controls, tie rods, shifter bushings, and hood pad. This W109 is also equipped with a 4.5-liter V8, working Behr A/C, reupholstered red seats, and a rebuilt Becker Grand Prix radio.

The W109 SEL models featured a 4″ longer wheelbase than the earlier W108, and the extended floor plan option has appeared in every subsequent S-Class generation. This example wears a high quality older repaint in silver, the bodywork is straight and this is a small dent on the trunk. The car is fitted with non-original Bundt alloys wearing newer tires. The original wheel covers are included with the sale.

A few minor issues in the finish are noted, including a small touched-in scratch on the left rear quarter, and a few minor dings in the chrome door and rocker trim

Recently the seats were re-stuffed and reupholstered with correct red M-B Tex vinyl to match the original door panels and carpets. Original Klippan seat belts have been retained. The Becker Grand Prix radio was sent to Becker for refurbishing and is said to work well. 56k miles are shown, but the previous owner states that the odometer has likely rolled over once.

This 300SEL is equipped with factory Behr A/C, which is said to blow cold. The previous owner replaced the original sliding heat and ventilation control hardware, with new original-specification parts, and has also replaced the dash lights. The wood trim on the dash presents well, and there is a hairline crack in the dash. The original books and manuals are included.

Power comes from a 4.5-liter V8 backed by a 3-speed automatic transmission. The previous owner had the car serviced with new tie rods, shifter bushings, a muffler and tailpipe section, and a new hood insulation pad during his ownership. A slight leak is noted at the steering box.

Several photos of the underside are provided along with images of the jack points. The air suspension was rebuilt by Buds Benz in Georgia with new valves and leveling rods.

The original tool roll is included, as is the original spare wheel and a complete set of metal hubcaps
