1987 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series 300TD (Touring Diesel) Description:

Rare 1987 Mercedes Benz 300 TD (300TDT) Diesel Station Wagon. 131 K miles (bought in 07/14 with 126K miles, previous owner seldom drove and last Mercedes Dealer service record showed 110K miles in 2010).
Back Story: The W124 chassis was introduced to the U.S. in 1986 but pretty sure that a wagon was not available. In 1987, the classic 300TD (Touring Diesel) was introduced. The "603" diesel engine was fitted with a diesel particulate filter (trap oxidizer) due to U.S emission standards. The trap oxidizer was mounted on the cylinder head (modern traps are moved farther away). The heat from the trap oxidizers could cause failure of the aluminum cylinder heads and debris from the trap could damage the turbochargers. Mercedes promptly removed the diesel wagons from production and by, 1990-91, recalled all of the 1987 diesel wagons to remove the trap oxidizers and replace the turbochargers, an approximate $3,000 fix. As a plus, most received a new exhaust system. From 1988 until the end of the W124 production in 1995, only the 300TE (gasoline) wagons were produced, meaning that 1987 was the only year for the W124 diesel wagon. To this day, I don't recall a diesel Mercedes wagon since 1987. After 32 years, this wagon surely has one of the lowest mileages, averaging about 4,000 years annually.
These cars were extremely well-engineered. At introduction, they were the fastest production diesel wagons. Optimized for safety, the W124 was the first car introduced with side impact beams in the doors to protect the occupants. These cars are tanks!
This car has spent the last 5 years being slowly restored, primarily mechanical and interior. All inner door panels replaced, console and switches replaced, dash wood panels replaced, light fixtures replaced. New turn signal/ windshield wiper/high beam and cruise control levers. Replaced power seat switches.
Mechanically, all new vacuum lines, fuel shutoff valve, fuel primer pump, glow plugs and controller, new injection manifold seals (March 2019), injector metal lines and rubber hoses replaced, power steering hoses replaced (March 2019), all engine coolant hoses, all heater hoses save 2 that will be supplied with car. (Good coolant and heater hoses are critical because about the only way that one can damage this engine is by overheating, which warps the aluminum heads.) New brakes pads front and rear and wear sensors. All filters regularly changed (transmission Spring 2018).
Exterior: new grille, headlight surrounds, front turn signals (euro style clear lenses with amber bulbs), rear tail lights. Replaced Mercedes star and emblems.
Engine fires up immediately, transmission shifts smoothly, self-leveling suspension works well. Paint is good but not perfect (there are a few "love taps" on the right rear passenger door from wife's car).
So what's left:
Front Seats: The present front seats are not original and frankly, are too bouncy. These cars have great suspensions but you can't tell by the front seats. The original complete driver's seat and power track and the backrest and power track for the original passenger's seat will be included with the car (the original passenger seat cushion is missing).
Radio: Original radio is in car but not connected. All speakers were removed by previous owner so don't know if radio works.
Air Conditioning: All new compressor, all metal lines and rubber hoses, new O-rings, new expansion valve and new receiver/drier. Unsure but believe leak in system in at compressor-primary hose coupling where a small cut is visible on the flange. This flange piece (Part # 124 82 24 01 or 0001312043) bolts to the top of the compressor but was not included with purchase of new compressor.
Cruise Control: New cruise control lever. Cruise control actuator included with car but uninstalled.
BONUS: Box-O-Stuff - box of new and still-usable parts for this car. Filters, light bulbs, seat parts, screws, clips, parts receipts, etc., etc, etc.
No visible rust on exterior and undercarriage still looks good. AZ and Texas car since 2013. Garaged. No window, door, or sunroof leaks in automatic car wash.
