1971 Mercedes Benz 350SL
1971 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Description:
First year production of the Mercedes Benz R107 SL making this a very nice future collectible. This particular 350SL is a European Spec car that was originally sold in Germany. It was imported into the United States at a later date, but before it was 25 years old as it was Federalized to a degree. There is no original paperwork or books. However, the car shows no signs of rust damage or accidents. In addition, the front subframe is in excellent condition with no corrosion or cracks. It most likely has been replaced. The car does have its original factory tool kit.
The silver metallic is the original color and it has the matching hardtop. The interior is black with pepita inserts, most likely not the original combination, but looks great. The dash does have a cap on it, so the original is most likely cracked. The headliner of the hardtop is black and in excellent condition having been recently redone. This car has a correct Becker radio, manual windows, and functioning air conditioning. There is also a rear seat, as the build tag shows was original to the car. The entire interior has been recently re-done and is in excellent condition. There are some small marks on the dash by the radio showing where an aftermarket radio had been installed. The car retains the original tools and the two handles to release the hardtop and softtop. The gauge cluster was replaced with a later model, most likely when it was Federalized. Indicated mileage is 85,322 and is unknown as to accuracy.
The exterior of the car has been painted to a very good quality. There is no evidence of serious accident or rust damage. The hard top trim does have some slight damage by the doors on the leading edge. The soft top is black and in excellent condition with a clear rear window. There are no rips or tears. All the glass on the car is in very good. This is the purest of the original 107’s with the small bumpers. The original Bundt alloy wheels also give the car a wonderful period look.
Engine and transmission function very well. It starts easily and runs strong, cruising easily at 70 mph or higher. There are recent invoices in excess of $18,000 indication significant work on the suspension, air conditioning, new stainless exhaust system and engine. The three speed automatic shifts well with no hunting or hesitation. Brakes are also perfect. Recent Michelin tires.
Overall, a very nice driver of a very early Mercedes Benz 350SL. Drive and enjoy with no worries. I am a private party. I purchased the car about a year ago and have enjoyed it quite a bit. However, I am in the middle of another project and need the cash and room.
