1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL Description:

Reluctantly I'm selling my "holy grail" 1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL with only 65k miles.

I'm the 2nd owner, this beauty was purchased in 2013 in Wenatchee with 28k miles. The original owners ordered and purchased from University Mazda in Seattle and I have the factory manual, order slip, etc.I also found a factory service manual a while ago which is very handy for doing any work on it.

It has most all of the available options including leather seats, removable sunroof (with cover), power steering, A/C (not functioning), power windows, cruise control, etc. This is the GSL model which has a limited slip differential and rear disc brakes.

Both control arms have been replaced. Rear brakes are new. This year I've replaced the alternator, starter, distributor cap & rotor, plugs, wires and main battery terminal wires. It also has a new Optima Red Top battery. It has the factory radio / cassette and EQ, but the tape deck doesn't really work anymore. The power antenna went out and I replaced with a fixed one, which isn't bad looking. I still have the main antenna unit (broken mast), as well as original starter and alternator which are likely fine as well. It has a very slow oil leak which I believe is the oil pan and oil cooler gaskets needing replacement. Also an extremely small brake fluid leak which I believe one of the front cylinders.

Last year the clutch master cylinder went out in spectacular fashion and got fluid all over the driver's side of the cabin. I took out the carpet and there was some bubbling in the paint underneath from the fluid, so I removed the tar sound deadening material from that section, cleaned up, refinished and put down some modern sound deadening panels to replace it. I still have the original carpet and padding which I removed. I replaced with Auto Custom Carpets "Essex" which is much more substantial and plush than the original carpets, but it needs a little love with a heat gun and/or some glue to hold it down in a few spots which I never had time to finish up. The carpet is really thick and heavy with a rubber back and was about $500.

The overall condition of the body, paint and interior are amazing for the age. Several years ago the front driver's side fender was hit while I was parked on the street. The fender was replaced by Auto Nation and they did an excellent job in matching, you cannot tell that anything ever happened to it. There are a few tiny spots around the body that could use some touch up paint in various places.

So, it has a few things that keep it from being "fully restored" or 100% original now, but it would be perfect for someone who wants a drivable time machine. It's very easy to do work on because of the small size of the engine. Now that the electrical gremlins have been resolved it drives and starts better than it ever did before and mechanically it's all there.

I would hold onto and drive this car for many more years, because I had two of them growing up and they are certainly becoming more and more difficult to find in un-modified condition like this one. I however also need the garage space for home projects and I do not have time to enjoy this beautiful machine as much as it deserves. There will be no mysteries with this car and you will not find one in better original condition with this few miles anywhere else (without paying a great deal more money than I am asking).
