As mentioned above, this truck originally had an LT77 but when it wore out the previous owner had an R380 installed and the transfer case rebuilt. New front driveshaft and bearings were installed during this service about 3,000 miles ago. Paperwork for this service conveys as do all my receipts for service/purchases.

I commissioned Lelofab and installed a Defender II rear seat across the rear tub. This accommodates three in the back and was perfect for my family as it had the Latch system for our kid's car seats and a integrated middle seat belt.

This truck now uses a push button start to circumvent known Lucas electric ignition issues. The key is still used to secure the steering lock however.

I also installed a rear camera above the license plate that runs all the time to my rear view mirror with integrated LCD. This modification significantly helps the driver with the Disco II rear seats up.

This D90 presents mostly original in paint, however the doors have seen a respray at some point. The clear coat is starting to peel in areas and bottoms are starting to show rust. Its passable and merely cosmetic at this point. There is some rust on the rear cross member that was mitigated by POR 15, with the remaining chassis and body in good shape. There are no apparent rust concerns in/around the bulkhead area. The Voyager rack is a nice addition for carrying all the gear up top. Common to the exo cages and brake lights bars is the outer covering or paint rusting and peeling as seen here. A few door dings present as well but nothing unusual or excessive. This is a 24 year old Land Rover with relatively low miles, all of the gear already added on, and you can actually drive it without worrying about a tree branch swiping it or a door ding at the mall.

Buyer of this Iconic truck gets a size large T-shirt in black and a stainless black water bottle with #357 on the Land Rover badge to match.

Model History:

In 1994 Land Rover North America imported approximately 1,943 Defender 90’s into the U.S (another 87 went to our Canadian friends). The majority were soft top versions, in either a full soft top or a “fastback” half soft top configuration. These stateside trucks were quite different from their European cousins (collectively called ROW trucks for “rest of world”).

In addition to all being left-hand drive, the U.S. version Defender 90 had added safety equipment and a different powertrain option, a 3.9L fuel injected V8 for 1994 and 1995 and a 4.0 EFI V8 for 1997 rather than a diesel engine. Those 7000 or so U.S. legal Defenders became known as the North American Specification (NAS) trucks, each badged and numbered on the right rear panels. They were outfitted with additional safety features to meet U.S. restrictions such as an internal roll cage and 4-wheel disc brakes. It is for these reasons, mainly the limited entry, that NAS trucks bring a market premium above a comparable ROW truck. They may look identical even to the well-trained eye, but the NAS trucks will always hold a special place in Land Rover history.
