1968 Jeep CJ Description:

Damn... I have to sell my favorite car. I'm building a new house out in the country. This is a 4 cylinder, half the valves in the block and the other half in the overhead position. Originally a CJ5, I began by mounting 7.00x16 military wheels and NDT tires. That changed the stance and raised the body up a bit. I then had the engine rebuilt... maybe 2000 miles ago. All new internals, new fuel pump, new clutch and pressure plate. I replaced the old generator with an alternator, and it works waaaay better. New carburetor (although it's from India and I suspect it was made from melted down ball point pens, but in spite of that it works very well). Since the car sat outside for a number of years ( it IS 51 years old) the floors had a bit of rust-through... I've pop-rivet-patched them, so they're safe and don't splash water. All new master cylinder and wheel cylinders. New brake lines and fittings. The split windshield is M38A1. A 'winter top' is included. Winter top means there's plastic over the rear window hole and connectors for side curtains and/or canvas doors. And, it's a little heavier than a 'summer top'. All top brackets and bows are present. I mounted the 5 gal. military gas can on the rear, this jeep has a tailgate, military jeeps do not have a tailgate. Just the same, it all works, and I have the canvas chain covers in place. I have another wheel for the spare, and I have a sort-of mount for the spare, but I just never got around to mounting it. Plus I couldn't find a tire. (Seats are non-military, but honestly, the CJ5 seats are a lot more comfortable for this 72 year old man, so I haven't really been in much of a hurry to find the M38A1 seats). So, there ya' go... if you want to put smiles on people's faces, get a hello wave from a bunch of people and thumbs up... this is the car for you. You won't be driving on the freeway, unless youre on the shoulder, moving along at around 50 mph. But this wasn't a vehicle designed for the freeway. Around town and on the secondary roads (gravel here in Oklahoma), it's freedom at it's best. My new home I'm building is about 15 miles from my current home. I've driven the jeep regularly out there and back (on nice days) a bunch. I really hate that I have to sell this. The trailer has been modified with a tailgate, (which I actually like, so you don't have to lift or unload everything over the sides) but, nevertheless... I replaced all the wheel bearings on the trailer, and new wheels and tires. Jeep speedometer made noise, so I disconnected it. The temp gauge always showed it was boiling over, so I carried a laser thermometer for a couple of months and it showed 168 degrees every time. Includes manuals on both jeep and trailer and a tow bar. This is a great rig. Good for many miles of smiles and fun. And every parade your small town has...

A little more... I have the period correct (although, re-pop) safety chains for the trailer, but the holes in the draw bar will need to be enlarged and it will require some welding. I don't think I ever wired the trailer correctly. I can't remember. When I got it, it had these hideous, giant, iron framed. humongous Ford tail lights that I removed immediately. (By the way, you are more than welcome to these). Anyway, the service manual has the original wiring diagrams. I'll even throw in a kaiser-willys parts catalog, that can help with ID-ing parts and has some sub-assembly drawings. And pricing. I think I still have the old master cylinder and wheel cylinders, and probably some new stuff that never got used. Headlights, tail lights, and brake lights on the jeep work. I'm not sure about the backup lights. I don't drive at night. The jeep. I don't drive the jeep at night. I normally drive it, on nice days, with the top off and windshield down. It's a little "peppier" that way. But if it's raining or snowing, then definitely the top needs to be up. Or at least get yourself under a poncho. It just occurred to me that I have about a half gallon of WWII OD paint! That's yours too. The pair need some work, but nothing that will keep you from cruising! I had a WWII jeep, ('43 GPW) for about 16 years... taught our son to drive in it... when he got to driver's age, I sold it. I had been laid off my job, the jeep needed a head gasket and it had to go. I sold it to a gentleman in Richmond, Virginia. I missed it the next day. I built a faux .30 cal machine gun and mounted in the jeep. (PVC fittings painted WWII Olive Drab.A couple of 2"x4"s, an aluminum printing plats, brads with heads that looked like rivets, PVC pipe drilled to look like the outer barrel, sight adjusters were Liquid Paper caps. Breech was controlled by a felt marker cap. Anyway, it all looked very real. (I worked in props and art department movies, videos and commercials for about 15 years) I had been to a car show on Sunday, (accompanied by my 15 yr. old son, who had to 'spend the day with dad and have nothing to do but talk to one another'... heh heh...) On Monday I drove it to the bank and still had the fake MG mounted. I'm in the bank and look out on main street and a police car has parked diagonally in the street next to my jeep to stop traffic, has a walkie-talkie in his hand and recognizes me as I walk out of the bank. "Never mind. It's fatheroz and his jeep." Someone on a cell phone had called 911 to report a "man with a machine gun at the bank". sheesh. So anyway, bid to buy. It's a helluva lot of fun.
