1959 JAGUAR MARK 9 MK IX RHD MATCHING NUMBERS. withJaguar Heritage Trust Certificate

Up for sale is aMATCHING NUMBERS right hand drive1959 Jaguar Mark Nine 3.8 litre that has beenhibernating in California for the last 29 years until coming to NJ a year ago.

  • The Mark IX was popular as a ceremonial car for state dignitaries. When Charles de Gaulle paid a state visit to Canada in 1960, the official cars for the motorcade were Mark IX Jaguars. The British Queen Mother had a Jaguar Mark VII which was progressively upgraded to be externally identical to the later Mark IX. The Nigerian government bought forty Mark IXs, painted in the Nigerian state colours of green and white. The large Jaguars of the 1950s were sufficiently popular in western Africa that "Jagwah" survives as a colloquialism for "smart man-about-town".

This Jaguar was firstsold in England by Henleys of London and still wears both it's English plates. It was last registered in California in 1989 but arrived here earlier as I havea California repair receipt dated 1985.

The prior owner receivedthe car from the priori owner of 29 years in order to restore it to excellentrunning condition. He was a JaguarMechanic, who worked many years ago in the Jaguar factory where this car wasbuilt. He has a Limo service in Californiawhere he used MK IX's exclusively.Hespent 6 months with the car to have it in excellent running order .Here was his story from his for sale listing:

"Ipurchased thiscarin December when I was advertising my Mark nine of 20 years for saleon Ebay. The elderly gentleman who owned it called me and said he lived locallyand that I should buy his Mark nine as I was obviously the right guy for it asI owned 3 of them. Being the car nut that I am I went to look at it and foundout it had a bad transmission. He really didn't want to fix it and I had aspare transmission so I ended up with a fourth mark nine. I replaced the Borg warnertransmission (the original matching # will come with the car in the boot) andthen while driving it I noticed a miss in the engine which turned out to be abad exhaust valve. I ended up pulling the head and having it rebuilt with allnew valves and valve guides (see photos) The previous owner had recently hadthe carburetors rebuil, the fuel tanks cleaned and a new battery installed sonow it runs great. I also installed a new coil and electronic ignition. It hasfresh engine oil and filter, trans fluid and coolant. I have spent far moremoney and time on it than I planned and now that it runs well I am ready tomove it on to its next owner so they can do the cosmetics”

Since coming to NJ,the car has had the fuel system redone. All new copper 3/8 tubing, an inline fuel filter added before the brandnew fuel filter also in line. The glassfuel filter next to the carbs has been replaced, and the carbs cleaned. The minor surface rust and peeling paint onthe car was repaired, Numerous panels taken down to bare metal, primed and theentire car given a quick black paint job.The goal was to eventually restore it to the original colors with a highend paint job, and to clean all of the chrome.A new high powered stereo was installed with 4 speakers. All work in NJ was done at Kanter AutoRestoration in Boonton NJ, and most recently at JD Performance and Clastic MotorCars in Lake Hopatcong.

Below is a descriptionof the Jags condition.

Drivetrain- The fourwheel disc brakes work well and the master cylinder has recently been rebuilt. The engine idles smoothly and does not smoke and has good oil pressure (45lbscold 30lbs hot at idle) the car starts quickly when cold as the factoryautomatic choke works well. The transmission shifts well. The power steering isnice and light with no squealing. The tires are 16 inch radial whitewalls andhave plenty of tread. The rear end does not whine or clunk. Both the engineblock and cylinder head numbers match the Jaguar Heritage certificate and the I.Dplate.

Body and Trim- ThisJaguar came from the factory in the colors of Cornish Grey over Mist Grey andit looks like it has always been grey. The paint is ancient and I think quite abit is original. The car needs a repaint. There is surface rust as can be seenin the photos due to the deteriorated paint. There are a couple of small spotson the rear valance that have rust through below the bumper. The rest of thecar seems solid with no major dents just a few small dings. The boot floor andpassenger compartment floors are good. The chrome is original and most of itshows wear (see photos). The Jag still has its Lucas fog and headlights. Allthe glass is original and in good condition marked Triplex including thewindshield.

Interior- The interioris in good condition and in its original color (see photos) The previous ownerhad the seats, carpet and door panels refurbished a few years agoand atthe same time he refinished the wood himself. The seats are not leather but ahigh quality vinyl called partners leather that is used in new cars. All thegauges work as do the original purple instrument lights, map light andcourtesy light.

This Jaguar comes with itsown Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate that verifies its originality (seephoto), the original jack, various receipts going back to 1985, old Californiaregistrations, new windshield rubber, original tray the radio replaced, factoryrepair manual and two sets of keys.
