1978 International Harvester Scout Description:

This is a 1978 International Scout II Traveler that came from Texas and has never seen road salt. There are a few minor rust areas on the outer body; no structural rust, body mounts and floors are solid, floors still have original paint on them! The rust you see in the photos was due to dirt build up in the front of the rear quarters holding moisture; the dirt has been cleaned out, and the body is ready to be repaired or you can just drive it, your choice. Engine is a 345 V-8 with a two barrel carburetor, and runs great, no untoward noises and good oil pressure. In the last three years, this truck has had new shocks all the way around, new water pump, new aluminum radiator, all new belts and hoses, and a tune up including plugs wires and a rebuilt carburetor. The stock ignition has been replaced with a Holley distributor converted to magnetic pickup that fires through a GM HEI module mounted on a heat sink on the fender well- much better spark than the original ignition, and comparable to the expensive DUI distributor with parts available at any Autozone. All fluids including transmission, transfer case, and rear differential have been changed, and the oil was changed a month ago. The interior was trashed when it was brought up from Texas and was replaced with a nice 79 plaid interior, along with a brand new complete carpet kit that covers front seat area, rear seat area, and cargo floor, as well as the sides of the cargo area and kick panels. This Scout is currently licensed, insured and titled in my name and is driven, but the purchase of another Scout with sentimental value means that this one has to go.
The rust on the rocker panels consists of a couple of holes, but the metal around them is solid; maybe a leaf buildup held moisture? It will be an easy fix. The areas behind the door on both sides are just outer panel rust, patch panels are available for both sides from Super Scout Specialist for $52 per side. The doors shut like they should since there is no body sag, the rear liftgate opens and shuts well and the shocks hold it open like they should. The Scout has a Class III receiver hitch and is wired for a four wire flat trailer plug, I used it a couple of times to pull a two wheel utility trailer. Door locks on the passenger side and liftgate work fine, however the driver's side door lock fell apart on me and stuck the key in it. I have that lock with the key still jammed as well as a good lock that needs to be rekeyed, I was unable to find any old time locksmiths around here that would work on it though. This Scout originally was equipped with air conditioning, however the AC system was gone when I got the Scout. I intended to add AC at some time, so when I replaced the radiator I mounted a brand new parallel flow AC condenser in front of the radiator so it would be ready to go. The condenser is capped off and if you decide to go with AC, it's already mounted, just hook up your hoses.
This is a nice Scout, especially for the area of the country where it is located now. Values on Scouts are going up daily, and non running, no title examples with a lot more rust than this are going for $3000 on here. I've started this at a reasonable number, and my reserve is a very reasonable number considering the value you'll get with this Scout. Unlike most, I would not be afraid to drive it nearly anywhere, mechanically it has been put into shape to be a reliable driver, and the body is a couple of weekends away from being ready to paint the color of your choice.
