HAPPY BIRTHDAY 50 YEARS OLD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1968-2018

There were only (4) 428 Cobra Jet California specials. Only 1 was black with red trim with a bench seat. The last time it sold was @ $100K. Building a tribute car was the only way I could ever have one like it !! This car will be considerably cheaper. This is a near complete project car that was originally a small block and set up nicely for a BIG BLOCK. The big picture is : This car is a 90% done as far as hours/labor. Paint and body were completed in base coat/clear coat Raven Black in March. Front end suspension/steering and brakes are redone. Motor and trans are ready to drop in.
I will include motor and 3 speed toploader as a bonus with BUY IT NOW. You will need to finish. Major work is done. A guy/girl handy with the wrenches could realistically finish this in a few weekends. Maybe 48-50 hrs or less comfortably.
Car is sold on a " as is " basis as a project car. I maintain a 100% feedback rating because I don't sell junk and I try to communicate ALL the important details - the good and bad and the ugly, that I would want to know if I were buying something. Please ask all questions AND confirm answers prior to bidding to make sure this is the car for you. This way we are both happy. There are a lot of questions to ask : Is this or that included ? How much would it take to finish ? How many hours work is left ? etc etc. Please ask questions so we will BOTH be happy with sale. This will be a pick up item only with no returns. Inspect before you load it.
Ok so....here's the deal : I bought a nice dry Ca car with the intent of building it for myself, but have run out of time and space for the car. I bought a nice dry VIN matching ( on plate and door etc ) Ca car @ $9500 and then tore it apart and started from scratch.Spent too much ( $5500 ) on paint & body for a straight car. Only rust was passenger floor pan from window being out. It is replaced. Car was finished in high quality Raven Black base coat clear coat. It is a good paint job, not a " concourse " show car. Would still drop jaws rolling down the road and pick up 1st at Fri night local car shows. The folks FLOCKED around it and " ooohed & ahhhhed " when we took it out for pics
Engine compartment was stripped and repainted. I have built many many Mustangs, and I would actually say that the engine compartment on this is possibly THE nicest looking I can remember. I began installing the stainless steel brake lines. Rest of lines included for you to hook up. The front end was redone with new Pittman, tie rods, strut rod bushings replaced. Factory big block anti sway bar and shock tower bracing added. Rebuilt center link/ram/valve. Disc brake spindles rebuilt with new hardware, pads, rotors turned. Rear brakes rebuilt with new hardware, shoes and cylinders. Underneath front end looks VERY nice and detailed.
I then spent wayyyy to much on chrome and trim and little parts etc. My receipts are over $5K. Added was : new vinyl top, front/rear bumpers, GT gas cap, Shelby tail light bezels, rocker trim, roof rail trim, door handles etc. It has new Red GT/CS Stripes and new California Special script emblems on the 1/4s. Original Ford Mustang grille, Lucas fog lights and a set of 428 badges complete the look. The motor is a used 390 big block ( same block casting externally/visually as 428 ) pulled from a Cougar that ran. It is a C7ME casting with an era correct date code late 67. It has rebuilt heads ( smog GT pattern ) . Intake, valve covers, pan, exhaust manifolds were hot tanked inspected and detailed. Comes with rebuilt correct C8AE water pump dated 8F12, alternator, motor mounts ( frame mounts and rubber mounts ). Power steering pump/pulley assembly worked well and was cleaned and detailed. An original set of 1968 Ford CJ exhaust manifolds and orig Ford Cobra finned valve covers complete it. I will include a core Autolite 4300 C8AF 4V carb as a rebuildable core. Looks like a fire breathing 428 ( only your mechanic will know it's a 390, and that's only if he takes it apart. )
I have the seats, front bench seat redone in black, carpet, door panels ( installed ). and new bezels. New headliner ( installed ). Rear interior quarters and doors, dash, and jambs also painted.
I have a 3 speed toploader trans with bell housing and flywheel ( surfaced ).Oh yeah, AND I searched high and low for a NICE set of unrestored Ford wheels =original " 8M" series chrome with complete with, caps and trim rings. Nice newer tires with nubs still showing.
So...to be clear...This is a solid 1968 Ford Mustang. It was a small block standard coupe built as a tribute to the ULTRA rare 1968 Raven Black 428 California Special. I have over $20K in it. Externally it looks whole. However it has no drive train/nothing under hood....yet. The interior is bare. I will include the drive train and interior with the BUY IT NOW PRICE ONLY @ 14k. Dropping the engine and interior in would be the easiest and cheapest way to transport.
That was the " good" now, here's the bad and ugly :1) The body could use some more work on simply aligning panels. This is a " nuts and bolts " adjustment. They didn't fit that great from the factory, and I think this car could truly benefit and " raise the bar " with a little wrenching & "shifting ".2) The passenger floor pan was rusted out. not bad but it was replaced.3) The "lip" on the bottom front frame rail has a dent ONLY to the lip edge. Somebody in between 1968 and now jerked/towed it with a chain and dinged it. Minor-will not affect anything.
To finish, you will need to add/complete : install drive train= moto, trans, drive line. Cooling system= radiator & hoses. Exhaust pipes, new battery and plug in for hot coil & starter solenoid etc. Fuel system, rebuild carb included ( or buy a new Holley would be best ), flush tank. Connect brake lines and bleed. Install dash, instrument clusters, bolt down seats etc.Again, it is 90% done, but you will to spend some time to get it going and dial it in. GREAT father/son or mother /daughter project. I would guess another $ 1200-1500 realistically to complete. Could be less or more depending on how you want to set it up. Just want someone to know up front there will be more expense to get it to 100% cruising.
I have close to $20K in this plus labor, and will be taking a hit, but not a beating. The last REAL big block GT CS I built and sold went for $72,500. It was a Sunlit gold /black car with a 390 and can be seen in google images of GT CS cars sitting on a cliff overlooking the beach. This will either be somebodies most favorite car they ever had....or.... a solid $$$ maker when the complete it. Hate to use the " my loss your gain..." tag phrase, but....That's the way it is.
Again, PLEASE : ASK ALL QUESTIONS AND CONFIRM ALL ANSWERS PRIOR TO BIDDING SO WE ARE BOTH HAPPY.
