Description: In mid-February 1968, California begun to market a factory-built, limited-edition Mustang, called the GT/CS, or "California Special". The hope was for a targeted production run of 5,000; however, only 4118 were made, including 251 units that were remarketed in Denver, Colorado. I’ve owned this car for 27 years and it has been exclusively stored until 2 years ago when I decided to finally make it a driver for limited use on weekends about town.

For sale is a 1968 Ford Mustang California Special VIN 8R01J167131. This is the real deal, a GT model, and has been incrementally restored to a rust free condition in a private garage with an eye towards making it authentic but drive-able on today’s non-leaded gas and roads so minor modifications were made along the way; lots of new NOS or reproduction parts were used. The rust free body and interior are restored to stock appearance except for the steering wheel. Only 4118 of the Mustang GT/CS were produced and less than 500 with the GT configuration, very few in this color and equipment combo. A slightly later model AM/FM Ford stereo radio and speakers which looks perfect adds to the driving pleasure. This car is really special as it is has the original 302 engine with a 4 speed transmission plus a Magnaflow exhaust. Under the hood you find improvements that make this car drive-able on unleaded gas with an HEI ignition, new Edelbrock 4bbl carburetor/manifold, roller rockers and Edelbrock aluminum heads. The front suspension has also been beefed-up and lowered about an inch with GT springs, shocks and stiffer roll bar plus new BF Goodrich T/A tires and power brakes with stainless brake lines; she handles and sounds like a dream. This California Special Mustang is ready to roll and is a blast to drive. These are special Mustangs the GT version with the 302 engine and 4 speed tranny being the most special and the price will only go up as they age. The trunk is full of goodies that go with the car.

Note - I purchased the car not running and massivelyrusting away gracefully in original condition in the Hawaiian salty air i.e. with all the original and proper GT and California Special badges in place, etc. Nothing had been changed from 'as built' original. I have had some feedback that this car was originally a High Country Special. It may or may not have been sold in Colorado per Marti Report but it was never set up as a High Country Special (drill holes for badges, would be different than the way this car was set up, etc) nor were any badges changed or added by me other than to replace those that were deteriorated beyond repair. Most still on the car are refurbished original; the GT gas cap, Cal Special logos and hub caps are original to the car. This car was last serviced by Executive Motors in Santa Fe New Mexico and then stored.
