1929 Ford Model A Speedster Description:

1929 Model A Ford Speedster
Newly rebuilt engine in the fall of 2014. The engine comes with many upgrades to enhance performance, power and speed. The block, head and frame are all original with no rust. This car has been garage kept and only has 43,531 miles and since the rebuild at 42,991 miles. The new engine only has 540 miles on it. This is a very strong running and reliable car. Whether you are hill climbing or out for a cruise, this car won' let you down. This car has also won 1st Place in a big car show for this area and is sure to spark up a conversation wherever you may take it.
Let's get to the car and the items that have been reused, replaced and upgraded to give it more power with that same look as the original engine with a few minor exceptions.
Frame - original frame has been sandblasted and hand painted.
Sheet Metal - As far as I know this is the original cowl and hood, radiator shell, SOLID STEEL, etc. None of these items show any signs of rust. The gas tank that was originally in the cowl is longer in use, it now has a 10 gallon tank under the rear homemade aluminum cover behind the seats.
Rear End - The rear end was upgraded at the same time the engine was rebuilt. The original 3:78 gear was replaced with a 4:11 rear end gear to provide more bottom end torque and power and also very good to use with an overdrive conversation kit. Believe me, you can squeal the tires in all 3 forward gears with no problem at all. The rear hubs and brakes are completely new also.
Drive Train - Speedster has the original 3 speed transmission with all new gears and has an upgraded V8 pressure plate and clutch assembly for the hill climbing type of folks.
Electrical - The car has been converted over to a 12 volt negative ground system. Car has a new alternator and some other specialty parts so as to when you are participating in a hill climb event, you can shut off the alternator off, so the fan and water pump don't run off the alternator but instead off of the battery only. This by the book is supposed to add anywhere between 8-12 more HP while hill climbing. The car also has been upgraded with turn signals, headlights and all the safety equipment to be street legal.
Engine Components - As stated earlier, the engine was completely taken apart, magna fluxed, bead blasted clean, acid dipped and thoroughly check for any cracks or other items that would make the original engine not satisfactory to rebuild. The engine block was decked to ensure the top of the engine was true to allow the head to be shaved down .050. The head on the car was an aftermarket only available form 1929-1932 through the Sears catalog. The head was produced by the Michigan Foundry Group (MFG) the only foundry in the United States during that time frame. The head originally was listed to have 5.5 to 1 compression. I would guess that the head now is between 6:5 - 7:0 to 1 compression. I say this because there is no way a man can hand crank this car anymore. The crankshaft has been counter balanced and re-ground down to .010/.010 with new timing gear. The main bearing's have been poured and bored to allow the crankshaft to fit. Complete valve job to include modern stainless steel valves, one piece valve guides, modern retainers, oversized intake valves, intake ports have been oversized for valves, cut seat and hand lapped valve seats. The camshaft is a touring grind that comes with a .296 lift at the intake valve and .297 exhaust valve with an intake centerline of 123 Degrees and an exhaust lobe centerline of 122 Degrees. The flywheel has been lightened and added a new starter ring and pilot bearing. The connecting rod's are an exact match for the crankshaft at .010, the wrist pins have been fitted. The pistons and rings are new and were ordered to fit the .100 bore that the block has had done. Comes with a new 5 Blade fan and steel hub to cool this engine. The original crank pulley has been replaced with a steel crank pulley, thus cannot be used to start the car by hand any longer. The oil pump has been completely rebuilt and added an oil filter system to the car. Finally, the car has a YL-23 Mallory distributor with all new plug wires. I also have an electronic ignition conversion kit and new coil that have never been put on yet.
Steering Components - The steering gear box has been upgraded to and later Ford F-150 gear box and has gas filled shocks absorbers.
Brakes - The brakes rods are all original and Has Not been switched over to hydraulic brakes.
Exhaust - The car has a special made steel header with a custom exhaust with a cutout installed right below the headers to provide even more power when the car is being used for hill climb racing.
Fuel System - Car has an aftermarket 10 gallon tank relocated to the rear of the car connected to a 12 Volt electronic fuel pump. The fuel lines are copper, run up along the passenger side of the frame and then transfers over to rubber gas line for flexibility. The car is equipped with 2 fuel pressure regulators. One is if you are only running one carburetor and the other has been installed for when running a two carburetor setup. It also has a fuel pressure regulator installed on the firewall to allow for easy adjustments to adjust to the desired fuel pressure for running one or two carb setup. Right now the car has a single aluminum downdraft ANSEN intake with a 1" aluminum riser and leveling plate to allow the float on the carb to set level since the way the engine mounts were designed to have a slight tilt rearward on the engine. The car comes with a Tatterfield Dual downdraft aluminum intake. The car comes with another 1" Aluminum riser and leveling block. The car comes with 3 Stromberg 97 Carbs, 2 of which are operational the other can be used for parts, many different jet sizes, power valves and also adjustable jets. The car also comes with standard and progressive linkage for running the two carburetor setup. Both carbs also come with air scoops along with K&N Air Filter systems.
Wheels - (4) original 19" spoke wheels and (2) 1940 Ford 15" wheels to allow for using a wider 7" tire on the rear or more grip to race in hill climbs.
The car has to bomber style seats, with seat belts, and a roll bar which can be removed very easily. Also has two small Brooklands adjustable windshields for comfort while touring the countryside. This car has a clean title in hand. If you want to own a real piece of history, that is still left from the prewar era, this is a unique and one of a kind piece of original American made cars. This rare piece will be 90 Years old in a few months. Don't' miss you chance on owing a piece of real American history and one of the 1st types of race cars this country has produced.
