Description:

1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder Conversion --

1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Conversion Single ownership from 1977! Serial Number: 13839 Engine Number: B758 Our client traded in his 275 GTB for this European version Daytona in 1977 to Gerry Marolda's Exotic Cars, which was here in the Chicago area at the time. He commissioned them to convert this car to a Spyder. The conversion was performed using factory parts as reported to us from one of the craftsmen who performed the work. The owner's stipulations were to remove the headrests and rear bumpers to achieve a cleaner appearance and eliminate the "add on" look. Also, at that time the original Cromodora wheels were swapped for Borrani wire wheels at the customer's request. The workmanship on the conversion is superb with excellent panel fit, and the paint that was applied at the time of the project has withstood the test of time extremely well. What is really remarkable, though, is the rigidity of the chassis which has been constructed without modifying or converting the original fiberglass front fender wheel housings to metal versions. This vehicle virtually shows no signs of misalignment of the doors when lifted on a car hoist, as compared to say the Porsche 911 Targa of the era, not to mention numerous convertibles of every make and vintage. Our client drove the finished product in mild weather conditions on a fairly regular basis in the earlier years of ownership. It currently has 74,242 KM, or about 46,000 miles. In the mid-to-late eighties, the owner decided he would prefer an automatic equipped vehicle and switched over to a Ferrari 400A which, not surprisingly, was converted to a convertible! At that time, this Daytona was sent to Exotic Cars which had relocated to Californidfa for a mechanical refreshing. After the work was performed, it remained in storage there until we took over custodianship in 2008. It has been stored and maintained at our facility, Willow Automotive Service, Inc., until this day. I guess some would refer to this car as a barn find, but in this case the car was given continuous care and exercised on a fairly regular basis. The original leather seats look and feel great. The paintwork is above average for the years and is very presentable. The wheels look great, are true, and have staggered more recent XWX Michelin tires 215 and 225 15" respectively. The spare is a Cromodora wheel. The tool roll is in the trunk as seen in the photos. Unfortunately, the owners' handbook has been lost over the years. This car drives very well and can be driven anywhere. More recent items that have been mechanically tended to are cleaning and flow testing the Weber carburetors and converting the seals for resistance to contemporary fuels (although this vehicle has been treated with non-additive fuels). Also, the brake hydraulic system has been completely reconditioned. These items, along with periodic inspections and exercise have been performed to maintain the mechanicals. In summary, this vehicle is a survivor of sorts, given that the Spyder conversion was performed so long ago. It has been pampered for 40 years by a caring owner who entrusted the car with only knowledgeable professionals and enthusiasts. Please call with any questions.
