1949 Chrysler Town & Country New Yorker Town & Country Description:

This is a 1949 Chrysler Town & Country convertible Woodie. I am selling the car as a project, and it is a very solid and mostly complete car, except for a few items that I will declare later. The car is from the western US and I bought it out of Phoenix Arizona. The car was said to be a future project in a museum, but they decided not to restore the car. The car was completely sandblasted or chemically dipped to remove rust and paint. The exception is the door sheet metal, outside quarter panel sheet panels, the trunk lid top and rear of the trunk. The hood and fenders and splash pans were dipped.

I had the fenders and other sheet metal primed, and I painted the firewall and the front of the frame up to the firewall. I also brushed on Rustoleum red primer on the inside of the body tub and also the trunk area. The sheet metal is in very good condition. Fenders, hood, splash pans will need very little finishing before paint. The inside floor pans are almost totally free of any rusted areas. There are two very small (quarter size) hole in the floor pan just behind the rear seat cross support. The trunk floor is mostly solid, but has some areas that will need small patches made and welded in. There is also some rust pin- holes in an underside pan of the trunk at the very rear of the car.

There were a number of NOS parts provided to me with the car, and they are on the car. Includes 4 hubcaps, 3 of the 6 bumper guards, tail light lenses, front parking light bezels and lenses, hood front trim piece and hood ornament, and a couple of the grille extensions to the fenders. There are two new reproduction cowl mirrors for the car.The headlight doors were re-chromed. All the other exterior chrome will need to be re-plated for show. The steering wheel rim is very nice. The dash chrome cleaned up quite nicely.

The car came to me with a 6 cylinder engine setting in the engine bay, but I also received a correct straight 8 which is now installed in the car. I am missing some of the 8 cylinder engine parts, including the intake and exhaust manifolds, the water pump, and the bell housing. I have the other accessories including the starter, generator, carburetor, air cleaner, fluid drive assembly with pressure plate and clutch disc. I have the driveshaft. The distributor and ignition wire cover is on the engine as well. I have the transmission. I do not know the condition of either the engine or transmission.

The most work needed on the car is a wood kit. All the wood must be replaced.

Other items that are missing include: radiator, gas tank (I have the straps), gas door cover, the front pan under the hood in front of the radiator. There will likely be some other small items missing that I am not aware of. All the glass is in the car and could be used, with the exception of the windshield. Both pieces are there, but one is cracked.

I have a hydraulic window pump mechanism and lines that go with the car, however I do not believe this car came with that accessory. There are no hydraulic window mechanisms inside the body.

Almost all of the old upholstery is on the car, but of course needs replaced. The front seat bottom and both the seat bottom and back of the rear seat only have the horsehair padding and burlap. The back cushions for the front seat have burgundy leather on them, although I have an extra pair of front seat back springs that only have the burlap. I believe that the car may have had a highlander interior in it from the factory, and the leather backs are extra. There is one door arm rest that had the highlander fabric on it. The car was originally a deep red with the burgundy interior trim. I cleaned and repainted the complete top mechanism. Some extra paint comes with the car.

The serial number plate was on the car when they sandblasted it so it looks rough, however the serial number is quite clearly stamped on it. I purchased a new "Serial Number" tag that could be used on the car, but would have to be stamped with the correct digits.

All in all, this is an excellent start to a quality result for one of the rare and desirable Town & Country Woodie convertibles. They are a spectacular piece of automotive history when restored. It is not very often that you find one for sale that isn't already restored, and then you will see a price of $75,000 to over $100,000 for that car.

If you purchase the car for my "But It Now" price I will deliver it within 500 miles of Cleveland at no cost to the buyer. If you are further than 500 miles or do not need delivery, I will make an adjustment to the final buy it now price. Call Ted at 440-478-6801 if you have any questions.
