SS? 1971 is an extremely difficult year to verify an SS without a build sheet. Chevrolet dropped the SS as a performance option and made it an equipment option available on all V8s (BBC and SBC). As a result, the SS designation is no longer reflected in the VIN on a 1971 Chevy. All you can decipher from the VIN (136801L152730) is that it is a (1) Chevy (36) El Camino V8 (80) 2-door sedan/pickup (1) 1971 (L) California plant and was the 152,730 produced that year. PRICE Hagerty lists a regular (non-SS) 1971 Chevy El Camino in GOOD condition for $15,700. Their description of GOOD reads as follows: "#3 vehicles could possess some, but not all of the issues of a #4 vehicle, but they will be balanced by other factors such as a fresh paint job or a new, correct interior where applicable. #3 vehicles drive and run well, but might have some incorrect parts. These vehicles are not used for daily transportation but are ready for a long tour without excuses, and the casual passerby will not find any visual flaws. "Good" is the one word description of a #3 vehicle." Minor body panel rust along the baseboards behind the front tires probably prevents this vehicle from being listed as EXCELLENT under Hagerty's grading system (which they have listed as $21,900). I am not hard-pressed to sell but will entertain reasonable offers. BACKGROUND This vehicle is titled and registered in my name. I purchased it in October 2017 and I had fun dressing up the engine (see before and after pics). It was advertised as "numbers matching" engine and transmission, however the block was too worn for me to verify. I also can't be certain if the speedometer has ever flipped before I got it. I had another 1971 automatic El Camino I sold to pay for this one (see pic). UPGRADES I changed out the intake manifold (Edelbrock), distributor (MSD), carburetor (Edelbrock 750), battery (Optima Red Top), chrome fuel pump (Summit), passenger-side fender and battery tray (Summit aftermarket), radiator hose (Moroso), hoses (HoseCandy), valve covers and breather (Edelbrock Elite Series), alternator bracket and pulley (Summit), hinges (Eddie Motorsports), hood latch (Eddie Motorsports), hood pin (Eddie Motorsports), billet fuel line/filter/gauge (Russell), a chrome overflow tank (Summit), chrome radiator cover, billet hood adjustment bumpers, stainless steel bolt kit (ARP), and I completed the functioning cowl induction housing system. I also will include a new headliner and passenger-side "El Camino" emblem that I haven't installed yet. It comes with a used white vinyl bed cover (with a minor 1" tear around the center grommet). I obviously was very selective and Incorporated premium high-end additions (the Eddie Motorsports billet hinges, latch and pin are worth about $800). The vehicle runs and sounds awesome (check the video). The Hugger Orange paint is about four years old and has minor dings. The exhaust system was completely redone about three years ago. Tires are in excellent shape but the front and rear aren't matching. The front are both Grand Prix Performance GT (P245/60R15). The rear are both BF Goodrich Radial T/A (P275/60R15). A mild cam was upgraded sometime before I got it so I am unsure of the accurate horsepower. I have only run ethanol-free gasoline through the new carburetor.
