1966 Chevrolet Impala Description:

This a 1966 Impala SS 396 Convertible.
VIN : 168676S278145
Cowl Tag : (see the pic) It is a true SS convertible(66-16867) built in St Louis(STL001711) with red bucket seat interior(873-B) and Regal Red paint with a white top(R-1), (W2MS) Tinted window(W) a powerglide or 400 turbo(M) and Rear antenna(S), Deluxe seat belts(5Y).
The story is....A older guy bought it in the 90's, he drove it one summer and put it inside his big steel shed and it came out about once a year for spring cleaning maybe. So, it was a fairly fresh amateur resto when he bought it and it then became some what of a barn find over the next two decades. I bought it and the 396 started knocking the next day (20 year old oil and a stuck lifter). I removed the motor and went through it with a fine comb. Block was completely cleaned, crank was polished and checked for defects, new bearings, cylinders and rings were fine, new Howards cam, lifters and timing chain set, new fuel pump, oil pump, heads gone through and inspected(new seals), hoses, belts, gaskets, anything needing replacement was done. It runs a Edelbrock carb and older intake. Block Numbers are:
Rear casting number 3902406 (1967 396)
Front pad stamped numbers T1213IV (T=Towanda, December 13th, IV=1965-68 Cheverolet 325HP w/turbo hydromatic)
Trans is a 350 and shifts strong. If you get on it the tires will chirp when it shifts. Definitely feels like a upgraded shift kit to me. The rear is a 10 bolt posi. I am unsure the ratio, at least 3.73 as the motor turns around 3000 rpm at 60. That also makes it a lot of fun to drive around town, nothing beats that put you in the seat feel of a big block.
The top and the interior are new 20 years ago. Some of the most comfortable seats I've had in a car. I would either use a fabric stain or replace the carpet, it has a few small fade spots.
The paint is not perfect. We carefully polished the car and it really shines! There are some small scratches and a pro will point out a dry spot in the paint. The body is nice and straight. People drool over it everywhere I go, it is a very nice looking driver.
The brakes have been completely redone. New master, vacuum can, shoes, springs, wheel cylinders in front(backs were good), front hoses, lines. It is power 4 wheels drum so it stops just fine, but the pedal feel is kind of soft. We bleed the system a lot and that's just how they feel.
I'm a firm believer in updating electrical components. It had a 3-wire alternator, but it was wired poorly. I put in 3 fusible links(overkill is good) so it stops from all main entry points, the dash, the alternator, and the battery. Basically most wire under the hood is new and some under the dash. Everything is soldered and shrink wrapped. New switch for the top. Top works flawless.
So, in total you have a real SS V8 convertible with a big block, a strong 350 tranny, posi rear and a really nice driver that is ready to have some fun. I would not hesitate to drive the car anywhere or take it to a show.
