Here’s you chance to own one of BMW’s finest models from their M division. This 1988 BMW M5 is one of 1,236 imported into the United States. This unit has been meticulously maintained while spending much of its life actually flying down the highway, not collecting dust! Every major system has been reviewed and the car has been kept in great mechanical shape. Known to BMW collectors as the wolf in sheep’s clothing, this 80’s super sedan was stuffed with M divisions’ 24 valve inline 6 cylinder, S38 engine, producing 256 bhp. Power is transferred to the wheels via 5 speed manual transmission and factory limited slip differential.

BMW of North America only imported the U.S. spec model with Schwartz black over Tan natural leather. The paint is in good condition considering its age with the only defects being from a aftermarket sunroof visor that was installed at some point of its life. A few small clear coat burn spots are visible on the roof and near the rear spoiler. BMW M motorsport door handles greet its operator and passengers on all 4 doors. The interior is very well presented with absolutely no tears or creases in the seats. The shifter has been fitted with an illuminated knob from a Z3 M roadster.

Mechanically the car is in tip top shape as it approaches its 30th birthday. In fall of 2014, the car benefited from over $5,000 of extensive service from its previous owner, a BMW master tech. This included a new timing chain, new clutch, resurfaced flywheel, rear main seal replacement, new water pump, coolant tank, hoses, and even a driveshaft. The original BMW service booklet is included in the sale which notes dealer services from delivery up to 160,000 miles. A leak down test in 2013 showed all 6 cylinders at 3% leak down and 200 psi compression.

Refurbished two-piece BBS RC090 17’ wheels are wrapped in Continental Extreme DWS tires with excellent tread left on two, as well as two brand new tires (May 2017). A new fan clutch and spark plugs were installed in preparation for the sale.

The car was purchased and brought out to California in the spring of 2015 where it is legally registered and titled. A new O2 sensor and catalytic converters were fitted to make it CA-smog compliant. It has been a blast owning this car alongside an E30, and a pair of 2002s. It receives nothing but positive comments on SoCal Vintage BMW runs and other euro car shows throughout the Los Angeles area. However, its time to make room for other cars that would like to be owned in the near future! I am not sure why the car is coming up with an Autocheck issue for the odometer? However when you click on the detailed Autocheck report it says odometer checks ok. This car holds a CA clean title!
