VEHICLE DESCRIPTION
The Sprite quickly became affectionately known as the "frogeye" in the UK and the "bugeye" in the US, because its headlights were prominently mounted on top of the bonnet, inboard of the front wings. The car's designers had intended that the headlights could be retracted, with the lenses facing skyward when not in use; a similar arrangement was used many years later on the Porsche 928. But cost cutting by BMC led to the flip-up mechanism being deleted, therefore the headlights were simply fixed in a permanently upright position, giving the car its most distinctive feature.
The BMC Competition Department entered Austin Healey Sprites in major international races and rallies, their first major success coming when John Sprinzel and Willy Cave won their class on the 1958 Alpine Rally. In 1959, the Sprite was introduced to the U.S. market by racing and winning its class in the 12-hour race at Sebring. Private competitors also competed with much success in Sprites. Because of its affordability and practicality, the Austin Healey Sprite was developed into a formidable competition car, assuming many variants by John Sprinzel, Speedwell and WSM. The Sebring Sprite became the most iconic of the racing breed of Austin Healey Sprites. Many owners use their Austin Healey Sprites in competition today, fifty years after its introduction
VEHICLE CONDITION
Up for auction is a rare true barn find from a California estate. The 1960 Austin Healey Mark I, Bugeye Sprite features a hard top convertible and likely the wire frame from a previous soft top.
The car will be sold with Probate Records from the Estate to receive a title from the State of California and also related records from the County where the vehicle was sold to me. As you can see, the vehicle would be a challenging and yet, worthwhile restoration projection. The bones of the car are good and you can see surface rust but overall in solid condition from its long tenure in California. Most of the car is intact however, the engine and transmissions were removed for a different project by the previous owner and it's now time for an upgrade.
The windshield should be replaced and can be obtained online. The vinyl interior is in poor condition as are the seat covers. The front bonnet is stuck shut but we can go underneath and manually open. I didn't want to break anything. The dash board should be recovered or it could stay shabby chic. Vintage hard tops are highly sought after as are the vintage parts such as the bonnet, lighting, dash instruments and many other parts.
The car rolls easily and we can assist you to load upon a trailer. Please note for those potential buyers not residing in the continental US, we can assist to bring the vehicle to the international shipping that can occur in the greater Los Angeles area for shipping overseas. However, shipping will be the responsibility of the buyer as well as the cost to ship. Please contact me prior to the end of the auction regarding any international shipping as I want to be sure that we are on the same page.
As you can see the vehicle needs a good cleaning both inside and out and this would help to bring this car back to life. I may have missed something but I did my best to explain this vehicle.Please see the numerous photos and feel free to ask questions. Deposit. We require a non-refundable deposit within 24 hours of the end of the auction and full payment within a week (3 days) of the auctions end.

Fortunately, this car is Smog exempt in the People's Republic of California.

Anyone with a user ID of zero or a user ID that has been made after this vehicle is listed will have their bid cancelled without reservation. If you have less than 5 purchases on Ebay, we ask that you reply with a message and your phone number.
We have the right to end the auction early and to sell locally. Ebay is a useful way to promote and list vehicles but we also will sell the vehicle through other modalities. If the vehicle sells outside of Ebay, we will immediately cancel the auction because of this. Thank you.
